Every cat owner knows the story: you bring home a cat tree, and the cat sleeps in the box it came in. The good news is that cats are predictable about what they like. A tree that's stable, tall enough and in the right place will get used, and it'll save your couch at the same time.
1. Stability comes first
If a tree wobbles when a cat jumps onto it, that cat will often stop using it. Look for a wide, solid base and a reinforced frame, especially on taller trees. If your tree comes with a wall strap, use it. Once it's in place, give it a firm shake yourself: it should feel planted.
2. Think vertically
Cats feel safest when they can watch the room from above, which is why the top perch is almost always the favourite spot. A taller tree gives them that lookout, and in a multi-cat home it means each cat can claim their own level instead of competing for one bed.
3. Give them something to scratch
Scratching is normal, healthy behaviour: it keeps claws in shape and lets cats stretch and mark their territory. Sisal-wrapped posts are ideal because they're rough enough to be satisfying. A post tall enough for a full upward stretch is far more appealing than a short stub.
Already have a cat scratching the couch? Put the cat tree right beside that spot first. Once the habit moves to the tree, you can shift it a little at a time.
4. Mix up the spaces
The best trees offer a few different ways to rest: an open platform for lounging, a basket or hammock for curling up, and an enclosed den for when they want to be left alone. Ladders and staggered platforms make it easier to get to the top.
5. Match the tree to your cat and your room
- Kittens and older cats do best with smaller gaps between levels and easy steps up.
- Bigger cats need wider platforms and a heavier base.
- Small spaces suit compact or corner designs that use height rather than floor space.
Measure the spot before you buy, including the ceiling height, and pick somewhere near a window if you can. A view of birds and passing traffic is half the appeal.
